Who is Nate?
Nate Wells was a long-time City employee who "took an ugly pile of
dirt and weeds and transformed it, working on his own time."
The Nate's Point Dog Off-Leash Area is located on the West Mesa of Balboa Park, immediately south of El Prado / Laurel Street and east of Balboa Drive [map]. The off-leash area is approximately 2.3 acres in size, and has been used as a dog park since 1996. This off-leash park is one of the most popular dog parks in the San Diego region, and is used every day of the year. Thanks to local support of our improvement plan, the park is completely fenced, and amenities include drinking fountain, picnic tables, and double-entry gate.

Nate's News
We will be posting updates to the Nate's Point Of-leash Dog Park improvement plan on this page as we make progress. We are currently in the process of starting up the improvement plan again. This is a timely process and we are moving forward with setting up all the required meetings to get this plan off the ground. We will also be setting up a blog page on this website so we can get your feedback and ideas to the improvement plan.
San Diego Parks & Recreation Rules
All dogs shall be maintained on a leash not to exceed 8 feet, this includes trails and canyons in all parks. For those parks that have been designated dog off leash areas, dogs must be leashed until inside the posted boundary for the off leash area.
Dogs benefit by being protected from rattlesnakes, ticks, traffic and various other hazards and distractions. In addition, poison oak is spread from dogs to humans.
We understand that people love their dogs and want a place for them to run free, play fetch, and socialize with other dogs. The City of San Diego has designated off leash dog areas for just this reason. It is necessary to keep your pets within the boundaries of the posted "Designated Dog Off Leash" areas as the perimeters may be unsafe for your dog (ex. traffic, sharp objects that can injure them).
Please adhere to the posted park rules and also...
